It's become more difficult for high schoolers to find an original way to announce their commitment to a school over the years, as it seems like just about everything's been done by now. Don't tell that to four-star safety Todd Harris, though. He figured out a way to surprise everyone over the weekend.

Paul Distefano, Harris' coach at Plaquemine High School, posted on social media that Harris would announce his commitment on Sunday afternoon. He even posted a photo of a table with hats on it from Alabama, LSU and Ole Miss. When the moment of truth came, however, Harris didn't choose any of the three hats on the table.

Instead, Harris pulled out the hat of his Louisiana high school and removed his jacket to reveal a Plaquemine T-shirt; he then announced his commitment to his high school.

As you'd expect, some people found the prank funny, while others -- particularly recruiting writers and media members -- were either annoyed or angered by the whole thing.

Harris' coach wanted to make sure everyone understood it was all his idea, not Harris'.

"Look, it was my idea," Distefano said, per The Advocate. "Please, I don't want anybody taking shots at Todd, because I asked him to do it and he agreed. There's so much going on with social media and recruiting. It can overshadow everything. Our deal was this: We want our guys to understand how fortunate they are to go to a school like Plaquemine High, where they have opportunities academically and athletically.

"Todd is very committed to Plaquemine High and always has been. Today was just a way to show that as we get focused on our season."

It's a nice idea, though I wonder how smart it was to announce it the way Distefano did.

They could have easily just done the ceremony without announcing it on social media and accomplished the same goal privately.

I don't care about how fans feel about it, but if you're the coaches at those three schools who have been recruiting Harris, having the wool pulled over your eyes can't be pleasant. Harris is a good player -- he's the No. 75 overall player in the 2017 class per the 247Sports Composite -- and it's not like anybody is going to pull his scholarship offer because of it, but it could easily leave a bad taste in those coaches mouths.
