Update: Jochen Wiest, 29, has been arrested on a charge of "desecration of a venerable object" and now faces a 1st degree felony criminal mischief charge, according to police. A local resident, Wiest was initially in police custody for a separate public intoxication charge, according to Elizabeth White of WTVM.

The felony charge for Wiest comes from the more than $2,500 worth of damage that was done to the tree by the fire.

Auburn horticulture professor Gary Keever inspected the tree on Sunday morning, and told AL.com he doesn't believe the tree has been killed by the fire, but the extent of the damage may not be known for "several days to several weeks."

Original story

Auburn took down LSU on Saturday night at home with an 18-13 victory that ended in wild fashion as LSU's game-winning touchdown was overturned after replay showed the clock had expired before the snap.

That finish for the Tigers first SEC victory of the year was worthy of a celebration, so Auburn fans took to Toomer's Corner -- as they always do -- to roll the newly planted oak trees. Somehow, during the celebration, one of the trees was set on fire and went up in a blaze as the toilet paper burned.

Firefighters had to come to the scene to put out the fire as it engulfed the tree.

Video shows someone walking up and setting the toilet paper on fire dangling from the right oak and walking away (15 second mark of the below video).

Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs tweeted Sunday morning that police have a suspect in custody. Hopefully the fire doesn't do significant damage to the tree, which is one of the new oaks planted at Toomer's Corner in place of the trees that were poisoned by an Alabama fan Harvey Updyke in 2010.
