Michigan State recruit cannot sign on National Signing Day because he's in jail
Donovan Winter was charged with burglary and larceny of a firearm
Here might be the strangest story of National Signing Day -- yet it's not a completely unique one.
Donovan Winter, a defensive end from Orlando, Florida, was supposed to sign with Michigan State on Wednesday. However, Winter won't be signing with the Spartans because he's reportedly in jail.
Really.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that Winter was arrested Monday and charged with burglary and larceny of a firearm. Additionally, he is "being held on $2,000 bond and also awaiting a GPS device to be placed on him prior to his release." When asked by the paper what Winter's plan would be, Bishop Moore coach Matt Hedrick replied, "No, he's not signing. Long story."
Probably so, but the details of it are scarce at the moment. The charges, however, are sobering.
Strangely, this is not the first National Signing Day story of its kind. Last year, Missouri prospect Marvin Terry was arrested and jailed on three counts of suspicion of assault. Mizzou eventually "moved on" from Terry. Exactly what fate awaits Winters remains to be seen, but suffice it to say this is not the type of day either side anticipated.
