Gus Malzahn has found his replacement for offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee, bringing Arizona State offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey back to Auburn as the Tigers' new play-caller.

Here's what you need to know about Lindsey.

A return home

Lindsey, 42, was just hired at Arizona State in December 2015 to fill the spot on Todd Graham's staff after Mike Norvell was hired away to be Memphis' next coach. Much of Lindsey's coaching career has been in the south and specifically in the state of Alabama, where coached alongside John Mothershed at Deshler and Rush Propst at Hoover before becoming head coach at Colbert Heights in Tuscumbia, Ala.

In 2013, Malzahn brought Lindsey on at Auburn as an offensive analyst -- the season of the BCS title game run. After that, he was hired away by Southern Miss (2014-15) and then picked up by Arizona State.

Expect Lindsey to put his own touches on a familiar system

When Auburn announced an open search for its next offensive coordinator, ESPN's Brett McMurphy reported that the next OC would "run the offense." Lindsey's time with Malzahn in 2013 means there is familiarity with the system in place, but this will also be a good chance for a rising star in the coaching industry to prove himself on the game's biggest stage. The Auburn backfield is loaded with talent and his stated style is committed to running the football.

"In high school, I was more of a 'spread you out' guy," Lindsey told AL.com in late 2015. "You still have to run the football and we still had that element, but you've got to get the best athletes you can on the field. All you can present to them is to have a good time. You don't have a scholarship to offer.

"In college, you realize you better be able to run the football," he added. "Then, you can have play-action and tempo and the screen game and all those other things."

Malzahn moving on from the Lashlee era

Malzahn's relationship with Lashlee stretched back to their days in Arkansas high school football, where Lashlee was the quarterback and Malzahn was a state-title winning coach. In 2016, Malzahn handed play-calling duties over to Rhett Lashlee in the middle of the season. As the offense picked up, both coaches got credit for their response after the change.

Malzahn wished Lashlee well during the announcement of his departure to take control of UConn's offense, working for the recently-hired Huskies vet Randy Edsall.

"This is a great opportunity for Rhett to implement and run his own offense," Malzahn said. "I've known Rhett for two decades, and he's a man of great character and integrity and this is another step towards his goal to become a head coach. I want to thank Rhett for all of his contributions and his friendship. I want to wish he and his wife Lauren all the best in this new endeavor."
