Pena had his contract purchased by the Giants on Friday.
Kelby Tomlinson's thumb sprain led to a need for a utility infielder for the Giants, so they opted to call up Pena. The 30-year-old is a career .244/.304/.347 hitter and hasn't seen a major league roster since 2014. He had a .784 OPS 215 plate appearances with Triple-A Sacramento. Because Pena was not on the 40-man roster, the Giants made room for him by placing Sergio Romo on the 60-day DL.
