Adam Jones' agent: MLB needs a 'Zero Tolerance' policy for racist taunts
Nez Balelo, Adam Jones' agent, wants to see a 'Zero Tolerance' policy for fans who make racist taunts
Monday night at Fenway Park, Orioles center fielder Adam Jones was heckled by fans who shouted racist taunts. Jones spoke out about the racism -- other players did as well -- after the game, and on Tuesday the Fenway Park faithful responded with a big standing ovation.
Nez Balelo, Jones' agent, is going to make sure this issue does not fall by the wayside, however. Balelo told Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports he wants to see MLB implement a "Zero Tolerance" policy for fans who make racist remarks. From Rosenthal:
"We are not going to let up on this one until we see implemented policies put in place in every city to protect these players and stop this type of reckless behavior.
"There needs to be a 'Zero Tolerance' rule put in place across MLB to punish people that are going to act this way. We need to set a precedent now that this will NOT be tolerated and if you are caught breaking this rule - throwing objects onto the field or saying demeaning racial slurs directed to a player - there will be harsh consequences to pay for this behavior.
"I have been Adam Jones' agent for the past 10 years and have lived and experienced this type of behavior with him throughout the years. It has to stop and stop NOW."
Red Sox team president Sam Kennedy said the club is exploring the possibility of lifetime bans for fans caught yelling racial slurs. That's a nice start, but until the policy is actual implemented and more teams get on board, nothing will have really changed. Jones and his agent are clearly going to push for a solution, as they should.
