Billy Butler apologizes for his role in A's clubhouse scuffle
Butler said he 'stepped in an area' he shouldn't have
This past Sunday, news broke that there was a fight in the A's clubhouse involving Danny Valencia and Billy Butler, the latter of whom got a concussion thanks to a Valencia punch.
Full details here, but a quick catch-up is that Butler butted into a conversation between Valencia and company reps for Valencia's shoe endorsement deal. Butler told the rep that Valencia was lying about what shoes he wears and that they should drop Valencia. Valencia told Butler to mind his own business, Butler came back with some not-so-nice words and Valencia clocked him.
On Wednesday, Butler spoke with reporters and apologized. Via sfchronicle.com:
"First off, I want to say to my teammates, I want to apologize for putting them through this because they didn't deserve this," Butler said. "This was an issue between me and Danny. They didn't deserve this, the coaching staff didn't deserve this, the organization didn't deserve this. This something that could have been prevented on both sides."
------
"It was one of those things, we both had equal fault in this," Butler said. "I definitely said some things you shouldn't, I definitely stepped in an area you shouldn't. That wasn't my business."
Butler also said that he was certain that Valencia didn't mean to give him a concussion, which is probably a fair statement.
An interesting movement the past few days has been teammates of the two players, past and present, seeming to get Valencia's back.
Such as Eric Hosmer:
Don't understand all the negativity towards Danny Valencia. One of the better teammates/friends I've had in this game.

Or Coco Crisp:
I feel the same, Danny has been one of my favorite teammates as well. Solid guy and a hard worker. https://t.co/Bt7f3GAlCY

Not that it means Valencia was OK to punch his co-worker. He wasn't. It's just interesting.
