Red Sox issue statement and apologize to Adam Jones for racist behavior from fans
Jones faced racist taunts by the Fenway Park crowd on Monday
Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones said he was subjected to racist behavior by the Fenway Park crowd. In addition to having a bag of peanuts thrown at him, Jones said he also had multiple racial epithets tossed his way.
The Boston Red Sox responded to the incidents by issuing a public apology on Tuesday. Here's what the team said:
"The Red Sox want to publicly apologize to Adam Jones and the entire Orioles organization for what occurred at Fenway Park Monday night. No player should have an object thrown at him on the playing field, nor be subjected to any kind of racism at Fenway Park. The Red Sox have zero tolerance for such inexcusable behavior, and our entire organization and our fans are sickened by the conduct of an ignorant few. Such conduct should be reported immediately to Red Sox security, and any spectator behaving in this manner forfeits his/her right to remain in the ballpark, and may be subject to further action. Our review of last night's events is ongoing."
Apologizing is a good first step, and we'll see if the Red Sox find a way to prevent this from happening again.
Tanisha Sullivan, the president of the Boston chapter of the NAACP, has since commented on Jones' treatment:
"There is something about the climate here" in Boston, she said. "There is something about the climate that made people think it was okay. That made people think that, in a crowded stadium, they could shout out these words, and not only would they not be arrested — but the people around them would find it acceptable. And that speaks to something very deep.''
As has Boston mayor Marty Walsh
What happened last night at Fenway Park is unacceptable and not who we are as a city. (1/2)

These words and actions have no place in Fenway, Boston or anywhere. We are better than this. (2/2)
