Jarrod Saltalamacchia to sign with Diamondbacks
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is expected to sign with the Diamondbacks once he clears waivers, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman. Saltalamacchia was designated for assignment by the Marlins on April 27 and was placed on release waivers Tuesday.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale confirmed Saltalamacchia will start out in the minors, per MLB Network Radio.

"He's going to play in Reno (Triple-A), get his game right and we'll figure out how we're going to work this thing," Hale said.

Tuffy Gosewisch has been the Diamondbacks' primary catcher in 2015, starting 19 of 26 games behind the plate. However, he hasn't provided much offensive support, batting just .208 with no extra-base hits and five RBI in 20 games.

The Mariners, Orioles and Royals were also teams reportedly interested in signing Saltalamacchia, who lost his starting job with the Marlins to rookie J.T. Realmuto.

Saltalamacchia has a .240/.310/.415/.725 slash line over nine MLB seasons. He hit a career-best 25 home runs in 2012 with the Red Sox.

Mariners, Orioles, Royals, D-Backs after Jarrod Saltalamacchia
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com

Four teams are in pursuit of signing catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia following his release from the Marlins, according to The Boston Globe

The teams interested in Saltalamacchia are the Mariners, Orioles, Royals and Diamondbacks. The Red Sox, a team Saltalamacchia has played previously for, are not looking to acquire him at this time.

Saltalamacchia's season is off to about as bad of a start as possible from the plate. Through the first month of the year, he holds a slash line of .069/.182/.207.

The Marlins were interested in trading Saltalamacchia but released him when one never materialized.

Report: Diamondbacks could pursue C Jarrod Saltalamacchia
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Now that catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has officially been released by the Marlins, teams are starting to do their due-dillegence on the veteran backstop in preparation for making a possible run to sign him. One of those teams could be the Diamondbacks.

"He's a player that we're going to talk a little bit more in-depth about," general manager Dave Stewart said Tuesday, per the Arizona Republic. "I have to see what our scouts are saying and talk to our internal guys, and if it makes sense then we'll make the next step."

Currently, the Diamondbacks have Tuffy Gosewisch as their primary catcher, with Jordan Pacheco as the backup. Neither one has swung the bat all that well this season, though Pacheco has five hits in his last 15 at-bats.

"Although Tuffy has done a really good job defensively, we still expect a little more offense from him," Stewart said. "He may make those adjustments, but with that being said, we have to at least go through the process internally and see if Saltalamacchia is an option to bring here."

Marlins announce release of C Jarrod Saltalamacchia
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

The Marlins have released veteran catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia. A trade that had been rumored never materialized.

Saltalamacchia, who turned 30 on Saturday, might not be out of a job long. Several teams are reportedly interested in him, including the Diamondbacks, Rays and Royals.

His slow start at the plate cost him his spot. Saltalamacchia, whose production dipped dramatically last year, owns a disturbing slash line of .069/.182/.207.
