The expected happened Tuesday night on SmackDown Live as Kevin Owens reclaimed the United States championship and put an end -- for now -- to his long-term storyline with Chris Jericho.

Just 48 hours after dropping the belt to Jericho in a surprise victory for the veteran at WWE Payback, Owens cashed in on his rematch with Jericho now on the SmackDown roster. The only problem for Jericho fans? You won't be seeing him for a while (see the results below).

WWE managed to put together a decent SmackDown, which already faced an uphill battle competing with an absolute fire end to Raw on Monday night. However, with most of SmackDown's new additions from the "superstar shake-up" still not part of the brand, the roster was relatively thin. Let's take a look at everything that happened on Tuesday's show.

WWE SmackDown results

Backstage -- Jinder Mahal and Shane McMahon: While Mahal was engaged in a photo shoot with the WWE title earlier on Tuesday, commissioner McMahon approached him to take the title back to its rightful owner. McMahon also informed Mahal he had a match with Sami Zayn set for SmackDown.

In the ring -- Shane McMahon, Chris Jericho, AJ Styles and Kevin Owens: "This is the new Show of Jericho, smack it down, mannnnn," began Jericho after he was introduced by McMahon. Styles hit the ring and let Jericho know SmackDown was his show, and he hoped to face him at Backlash for the title ... as long as Jericho can get past his rematch with Kevin Owens. Jericho's challenger, wearing a hand wrap, interrupted Jericho from putting Styles on The List of Jericho and promised a beat down for later in the show, telling Styles to get the hell out of his ring. Rather than just stand there, Styles ran out of the ring and attacked Owens on stage; the two had to be separated by officials.

Jinder Mahal def. Sami Zayn via pinfall: The Singh Brothers obviously played a prominent role in the match, distracting Zayn or interfering on four separate occasions, the last of which allowed Mahal to hit a blindsided Zayn with a Camel Clutch Slam for the victory.

There's two ways to go with a heel like Mahal: You make all of his victories cheap thanks to his stablemates or you start building him strong with wins despite him being an undeserved No. 1 contender. WWE has chosen the former option, which does nothing to help legitimize Mahal but does help him pick up victories. Even worse is that Mahal was called a "true and real threat" by commentary due to his victory, which was obviously aided.

Backstage -- Becky Lynch and Natalya: The other women in the heel stable were with Natalya, who tried to convince Lynch that she is being completely overlooked by SmackDown management and that no one has her back. Lynch said she would think about the proposal of joining up with the rest of the women besides Naomi and Charlotte Flair.

Backstage -- Dolph Ziggler and Shane McMahon: With McMahon in his blindspot, Ziggler complained to others about the fact that Shinsuke Nakamura was absent from SmackDown, has not fought since being added to the main roster and is the man being used to promote Backlash. McMahon interrupted him, but Ziggler would have none of it. "I was real impressed by his entrance," Ziggler said sarcastically of Nakamura. "You want to know how to impress people around here? Watch what I do to Sin Cara." tonight. I'd hate to be that guy."

My thoughts exactly, Dolph.

Tye Dillinger def. Aiden English via pinfall: English sang before the match. Dillinger hit the Tye Breaker a minute or two into the match for three. English freaked out on the mat after the loss.

Backstage -- Chris Jericho and Aiden English: Jericho was being interviewed by Rene Young when a still-crying English walked by. Jericho consoled English, sharing all the positives in his life, but then put English on The List for crying during his interview, sending him into another round of tears. Jericho then put Young on The List for good measure.

If the English crying gag is part of a new gimmick, all the better. If it was just for the Jericho laughs, they really should send English back down to NXT to work on something new.

Carmella & Natalya def. Naomi & Charlotte Flair via pinfall:  It appears a if "Welcoming Committee" the name for the women's heel faction, which attacked Flair prior to the scheduled match. Flair did not appear until she stumbled to the ring midway through the match. Naomi got the hot tag and had Carmella pinned, but a distraction by Natalya on the ring apron turned the referee's attention. When Naomi went to approach Natalya, Carmella rolled her up for the 1-2-3. The five women brawled after the match, and Lynch's music hit. Lynch feigned as if she was joining the Welcoming Committee but instead attacked them and got beat down in response.

Dolph Ziggler def. Sin Cara via pinfall: Ziggler hit the superkick to pick up the win.

Sin Cara made this tougher than it should have been if Ziggler was "making a statement" against someone and building himself back up in preparation for Nakamura.

The Fashion Files: Breezango presented a mock Law & Order vignette where they came up with violations with which to charge The Usos. The set was great, but the lines were bad. There will likely be more of them.

United States Championship -- Kevin Owens def. Chris Jericho (c) via pinfall to win the title: Owens escaped the Walls of Jericho twice and took over after nailing a DDT on the floor well outside the ring. He followed that with a superkick for a two count and then a Pop-Up Powerbomb to a lifeless Jericho to take the belt rather easily. Medics checked on Jericho after the match as Owens feigned remorse. Instead, he hit him with another Pop-Up Powerbomb before departing the ring. As a groggy Jericho made his way around the ring with the help of two officials, Owens attacked again, placing Jericho's head inside a steel chair and running him into the ring post.

The surprise was Jericho winning the title at Payback in the first place. Owens taking it back and seriously injuring Jericho was not a shock considering Jericho is off to tour with his band, Fozzy. It looks like Jericho will sell injuries to his head and neck as the reasons for his departure. With Fozzy touring until the end of June, a SummerSlam return is likely for Jericho, probably in a continuation of his feud with Owens.
