Gennady Golovkin's next fight finalized, GGG will return to ring in March
GGG is set to face Daniel Jacobs on March 18 in New York
Gennady Golovkin is set to step back into the boxing ring. The WBC and IBF middleweight champion will challenge WBA titleholder Daniel Jacobs on March 18 at Madison Square Garden, Golovkin's trainer told Yahoo Sports.
The two sides were ordered to make the fight happen by the WBA after each fighter's most recent win. The two sides were hoping to make a fight happen before the end of 2016, but negotiations reportedly broke down and pushed their date back into 2017.
"This is a good fight for us," Golovkin's trainer Abel Sanchez said. "I think [Jacobs] is the second-best middleweight in the world and he's on a good run with [12] knockouts in a row. Gennady is extremely happy and he called me earlier and asked when we would get back in the gym. This is a fight we've wanted for a while."
Golovkin is 36-0 with 33 KOs and coming off a corner stoppage of Kell Brook in September where he broke Brook's orbital bone. Jacobs, meanwhile, is 32-1 with 29 KOs and is coming off a vicious TKO of Sergio Mora in September.
The fight is set to take place on HBO PPV and could pave the way to Golovkin getting his long-awaited shot at Canelo Alvarez.
