2022 March Madness scores: Upsets and nail-biters dominate Saturday's Round 2 action in NCAA Tournament
One No. 1 seed was sent packing while two others held on to advance to the Sweet 16
You want madness? The NCAA Tournament's second round on Saturday was happy to oblige.
The defending national champions are no more. No. 8 seed North Carolina survived a nearly record-setting comeback attempt from No. 1 seed Baylor to seal a 93-86 overtime win, making the Bears the first No. 1 seed eliminated from the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
The Tar Heels actually led by 25 points with 10:08 remaining, only to have Baylor end the half on a 38-13 run to send the game to overtime. Once there, however, the Bears shot just 1 for 11 from the field and North Carolina sealed its victory, along with a trip to the Sweet 16.
In addition to a No. 1 seed going down, two double-digit seeds punched their tickets to the Sweet 16. Tournament darling Saint Peter's became the third No. 15 seed to reach the Sweet 16, joining last year's Oral Roberts team and the "Dunk City" 2013 Florida Gulf Coast team. The Peacocks held off one of the tourney's best mid-major teams in No. 7 seed Murray State 70-60. And No. 11 seed Michigan followed its upset win over Colorado State with a 76-68 victory over No. 3 seed Tennessee. The Wolverines were a preseason top-10 team, but sputtered to a 17-14 regular season before reaching the NCAA Tournament's second weekend.
The No. 1 seed in the West Region faced a serious challenge to advance, too. The tournament's top overall seed in Gonzaga trailed No. 9 seed Memphis by as many as 12 points in the second half before coming back to win 82-78. Gonzaga has now reached seven straight Sweet 16s, and the Bulldogs are alive to reach their third Final Four in the last five NCAA Tournaments.
