What to Know
The New Mexico Lobos and the Texas-El Paso Miners are even-steven against one another since December of 2016 (2-2), but not for long. New Mexico's homestand continues as they prepare to take on the Miners at 3 p.m. ET Dec. 12 at The Pit. New Mexico should still be feeling good after a big win, while Texas-El Paso will be looking to get back in the win column.
Everything went New Mexico's way against the Denver Pioneers this past Thursday as they made off with an 87-67 victory. Forward Gethro Muscadin and guard KJ Jenkins were among the main playmakers for New Mexico as the former dropped a double-double on 12 points and 11 rebounds and the latter shot 5-for-11 from beyond the arc and finished with 21 points.
Meanwhile, Texas-El Paso found themselves the reluctant recipients of an unpleasant 78-52 punch to the gut against the Kansas Jayhawks last week. The Miners were surely aware of their 18-point disadvantage in the point spread, but the foreknowledge did nothing to prevent the result. One thing holding Texas-El Paso back was the mediocre play of guard Keonte Kennedy, who did not have his best game: he finished with 11 points on 5-for-16 shooting in his 32 minutes on the court.
Barring any buzzer beaters, New Mexico is expected to win a tight contest Sunday. They are currently three-for-three against the spread in their most recent games, a trend bettors might want to take into account.
New Mexico's victory brought them up to 6-4 while Texas-El Paso's defeat pulled them down to 4-4. Two offensive numbers to keep in mind before tip-off: The Lobos enter the game with 82.5 points per game on average, good for 23rd best in college basketball. Less enviably, the Miners have only been able to knock down 40.40% percent of their shots, which is the 38th lowest field goal percentage in college basketball. So the cards are definitely stacked against Texas-El Paso.
