Best bets for Friday

The NBA schedule doesn't have the quality of Christmas Day's marquee matchups, but there are several games that provide some intrigue. The Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks have both been sliding, but both are within 2.5 games of the Southeast Division-leading Orlando Magic and have playoff aspirations in the Eastern Conference. The Heat have lost eight of their past nine and are 5-10 away from home, but Atlanta is 2-8 in its past 10 and 5-9 in home games. The Heat also are without Tyler Herro and could be missing Bam Adebayo, while Jalen Johnson (23.8 points, 10.5 rebounds, 8.3 assists) has been playing at a high level for the Hawks. Still, the SportsLine Projection Model has Miami covering in 59% of simulations as a 3-point underdog. The Chicago Bulls are also home favorites in an Eastern Conference matchup with the Philadelphia 76ers, but the Sixers are covering in 60% of the model's simulations as 1-point favorites.

The NHL and college basketball have one more day off, and the NFL cranks back up Saturday, so college football bowl games are the only other options for sports fans Friday. Florida International faces UTSA in the First Responders Bowl at 8 p.m. ET. FIU (7-5) tied for fourth in Conference USA and has won four straight games, while UTSA tied for sixth in C-USA at 6-6. Both teams have been hit by players entering the transfer portal, but there could be offensive fireworks, with UTSA favored by 6.5 and the Over/Under set at 61.5 points.
