We've all seen a shanked punt before. But I know for a fact I've never seen anything like this.

That's Washington State punter Mitchell Cox booting the ball a total of 1 yard in the second quarter of Friday night's game against California. This came after Wazzu coach Mike Leach, who originally looked like he was going to go for it on 4th and 2 from his own 44-yard line, decided instead to call the punter on to flip the field just before halftime with the visitors trailing by seven.

Cox rewarded Leach's decision making with a 1-yard punt. As such, the ball was spotted at the Cougars' 45-yard line, and the Golden Bears immediately took advantage by driving it right down to the 1-yard line. That's where Cal coach Justin Wilcox had a decision of his own to make: Go for a touchdown up seven with four seconds remaining until halftime or kick the field goal and take a 10-point lead into the break.

Wilcox chose the former, and Cal quarterback Ross Bowers completed an easy play action pass to a wide open receiver, putting the Bears up 17-3 at the break.
