Well, we've made it ... our last mock before the biggest draft weekend of the year.

A lot of people have logged a lot of picks along the way, seeing the fads come and go. There was the Bobby Witt tease (he wasn't even drafted in this one), the Alex Kirilloff fakeout (he lasted to Round 21), the Will Smith correction (he fell to seventh among catchers amid new concerns about his playing time). 

This draft saw the adjusted values of high-end but now injured hurlers Zac Gallen, Carlos Carrasco and Framber Valdez, who went in Rounds 10, 12 and 15, respectively. Each went for a discount, though not an extreme one given that we might not see any of them for the first quarter of the season. This draft was also our first with Eloy Jimenez (torn pectoral) out of the outfield mix. With a timetable of 5-6 months, it's no surprise he went undrafted. 

I had the privilege of picking first, which I had yet to do this year. From the outside, I presumed that committing to Ronald Acuna at the start of the draft (or Mookie Betts, Fernando Tatis or Juan Soto -- a hitter, basically) would require me to go pitcher-pitcher with my next two picks, possibly dipping deeper into the position than I'd like so that I didn't get boxed out over the next 24 picks, but I instead took Corey Seager alongside Max Scherzer at the 2-3 turn, passing up the chance to grab Luis Castillo. And I think it turned out OK. I came away with a top-five of Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Zach Plesac, Kyle Hendricks and Dylan Bundy. 

There's some downside with that group for sure. They're not all going to work out, but drafting five of that stature acknowledges as much. The goal for me is less about paying up for highest-end pitching than giving myself more routes to high-end pitching. Five of my top 35 is the way I've put it before. Sinking all my draft capital into just two or three who have to pan out is the biggest no-no. The position is jut too volatile for that.
