Fernandez's season could be cut short out of Wild Card contention, the Marlins' official site reports.
Fernandez has already pitched 160.1 innings this season and the club would like to cap his workload a year removed from Tommy John surgery. Miami has a plan in place should the team continue the push for the playoffs but manager Don Mattingly indicated that the club may shut him down if they continue to slip. For now, Fernandez will continue to start normally, with his next scheduled outing coming Friday against the Dodgers and their ace, Clayton Kershaw.
