Lightning's Gemel Smith: Claimed by Tampa Bay

Smith was claimed by the Lightning from the Red Wings off waivers Saturday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

Smith will be returning to a familiar place, as he started the season with Tampa Bay and also spent the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons with the Lightning, picking up one goal and four points through eight top-level appearances. He'll likely be deployed sparingly as a rotational, bottom-six option by a stacked Tampa Bay team down the stretch.
