Freddie Roach keeps on running his mouth. This time, speaking with Jim Rome, Roach said he doesn't think Floyd Mayweather has been taught how to fight the right way.
"He was a good fighter at five, but the thing is, he's always taught himself and he's never really been taught the correct way to do things..." Roach told Rome.
Mayweather is, of course, undefeated in his 47-fight career. In those 47 fights, he's earned 26 wins by KO. So it appears Mayweather must be doing something correct inside the ring.
It should be noted, however, that Roach's insult wasn't directly targeted at Mayweather. Instead, Roach was in the middle of criticizing Mayweather's trainer and father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., when he dropped his latest Mayweather insult.
"The dad gets so nervous in between rounds, he has trouble getting the words out," Roach said. "He kind of stutters halfway through it, and he doesn’t really get the information across to the fighter. I mean, I'm really happy he's in the corner because the kid's going to be fighting by himself."
Following that statement, Roach elaborated by saying the bit about Mayweather not knowing how to fight the "correct way." Still, it's a curious statement to make about an undefeated fighter. I guess when you spend your fair share of time trash talking, you're bound to say something off base.
And if Roach is right about Mayweather's boxing technique, maybe then the Mayweather way should become the new normal. After all, it's been pretty successful so far.
