Don't look for veteran right-hander Chris Carpenter to pitch his way back to St. Louis any time soon. Brendan Meyer of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Carpenter, after experiencing numbness in his hand following his most recent minor-league rehab start, will put his comeback on hold for the time being.
"I’m going to take a little bit of time," said Carpenter, who's been with the Cardinals since 2004. "After that last one, it just wasn’t what we were looking for. I wasn’t happy with the way that I recovered, and neither was the medical staff. We are going to take a step back, again."
As Meyer notes, there's no timetable for Carpenter's return to the mound.
Carpenter, who was able to make just three starts last season, has been working his way back from thoracic outlet syndrome. He underwent surgery last July. At this point, it's fair to wonder whether Carpenter will pitch again.
For his career, the 37-year-old has a record of 144-94 and has pitched to a 3.76 ERA (116 ERA+) across parts of 15 seasons. In 2005, he won the NL Cy Young Award.
