The Dodgers announced the signing of catcher J.R. Towles to a minor-league contract Wednesday.

Towles, a former top prospect, was with the Cardinals' organization earlier in the season, batting .237 with a .943 OPS at Triple-A Memphis. He has not hit better than .200 at the major-league level since a brief call-up as a rookie in 2007, and is expected to serve as just organizational depth.
