Mets manager Terry Collins will join Sandy Alderson in returning to the team next year, sources said.

It isn't clear whether the Mets will announce the Collins decision at the same time they announce the Alderson extension, which was agreed to Monday. There is no need to make an announcement in Collins' case since he is under contract for 2015, though the Mets still might make it official with a public announcement.

More to the point, it isn't clear, either, why Mets ownership decided to give Alderson a three-year guarantee but will stick with one year for Collins. The Mets had an option for Alderson for '15, and technically picked up the option, then added two years.

It has been suggested here periodically that Collins was in line to return for a fifth season in the dugout. He has had the backing of club ownership, and the Mets' nice finish solidified his standing -- though apparently not to the point where they are quite ready to extend him at this point.
