Marlins interview Bo Porter for manager; he joins Acta as candidate
Bo Porter previously managed the Astros.
The Marlins have intereviewed former Astros manager Bo Porter for their managing position, sources said.
Porter joins Manny Acta as one of the two known interviewees for the job currently held by Dan Jennings, who is expected to return to the front office as general manager after the season (though that isn't official yet).
An extensive search is expected.
Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria has said he seeks an experienced manager this time around. The team has played better in recent weeks under Jennings, but he's been asked to return to the front office, sources said. Though it's not clear whether he has signaled he will be back in the executive role, he is under contract through 2018 under a seven-figure salary.
Porter, who's served as the Braves' third-base coach, is known to Marlins people, including Loria, from his time as third base coach with the Marlins from 2007-09. Porter, who also has coached for the Nationals and Diamondbacks, managed nearly two years in Houston.
Porter was hired for the 2013 season in Houston and was fired on Sept. 1, 2014 after it became clear he and GM Jeff Luhnow weren't a match.
The Astros were 110-190 in Porter's nearly two years on the job. The Astros were in a stark rebuilding phase during that period. They are a contender this year after some serious winter spending, with A.J. Hinch at the helm.
