Pennington sustained a right arm injury and has elected to retire, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Pennington underwent Tommy John surgery coming out of high school and has since battled a slew of additional arm injuries. The 22-year-old was traded from the Red Sox to the Brewers along with Travis Shaw and Mauricio Dubon for Tyler Thornburg in 2016 and had an electric fastball, but he's pitched in only 32 minor-league games over the last three-plus seasons. Pennington revealed on his personal Instagram he is facing another Tommy John surgery, prompting his decision to retire.

He missed almost three months with an elbow injury to start the season, but is back on track in the Midwest League. Despite being 22, these are Pennington's only two stars above short-season ball, so look for the Brewers to continue to deploy him at Low-A while being careful with his innings this season.

Pennington (elbow) remains in extended spring training as he recovers from surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
The soon-to-be 22-year-old has yet to appear in a game at any level this season following the elbow procedure in December. The organization has not released a firm timetable, but assuming he doesn't suffer a setback, Pennington will likely report to Low-A Wisconsin or High-A Carolina sometime in the next few weeks, where he'll continue his development as a starter.
