Steph Curry thinks 75 points is in range, but 100 'would be tough'
Even Steph Curry doesn't think he could score 100 points in a game.
Averaging 33.3 points a game, Stephen Curry is leading the NBA in scoring and has already scored 40 or more points three times this season. In October against the New Orleans Pelicans, Curry erupted for 53 points and came close to crossing the 50-point mark again against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday night with 46 points.
He's doing all this despite averaging only 34.3 minutes a game, so it is safe to assume that his scoring average could be even higher if the Warriors weren't blowing everyone out and he was forced to play more. It makes you wonder, under the right circumstances, how many point could Curry actually put up in a game? it sounds utterly crazy, but could he come close to breaking Wilt Chamberlain's single game scoring record of 100 points?
Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports asked Curry about this and the Golden State Warriors guard legitimately thought about the idea before giving his answer.
"It's a different game today," Curry told Spears. "I don't know many shots he got up but he didn't have a three-point line. A hundred? That would be tough. If I shot like I did in New Orleans and played full 48, maybe got 20 more shots up, I might [have] got 75-ish. That's shooting the ball really well, too. A hundred, probably not."
Curry's career high is 54 points which is still a ways away from 100. Kobe Bryant is the only player to ever come close to Chamberlain's record, scoring 81 points against the Toronto Raptors in 2006. Next to Bryant is San Antonio Spurs legend David Robinson, who scored 71 points against the Los Angeles Clippers in 1994.
Chamberlain's record will probably never be broken but if there is any player that could surpass Bryant's 81 points, it probably is Curry. Especially since he is such a good 3-point shooter (shooting 47 percent from downtown this season) and his ball handling allows him to get shots off with relative ease.
Curry may not ever break Chamberlain's scoring record however, but barring injury he will definitely break his own three-point record this season as he is currently on pace to make 426 three-pointers. That's not 100 points in one game, but still an amazing historical feat.
