VIDEO: George Gervin on a career that began with Dr. J, ended with MJ
The Hall of Fame guard talks about his all-time team, playing with Dr. J and MJ, and the differences in today's game vs. his era's.
Hall of Famer George "The Iceman" Gervin stopped by Boomer and Carton on Tuesday to look back on his illustrious career.
"I started my career with Julius Ervin and finished my career with Michael Jordan, so I got to see some greatness."
Gervin himself was pretty great, himself, and that's an understatement. Gervin is legendary for his offensive game. In 1979, he averaged 29.6 points per game, shooting 22 times per ballgame and shooting 54 percent from the field. And that's without the three-point line. In 1980 that jumped to 33 points per game, on 25 shots shooting 53 percent. That's Kevin-Durant-level efficiency, and he averaged roughly five rebounds and nearly three assists per game those seasons as well.
Gervin also spoke about the differences in today's ball players, elaborating that he doesn't feel today's players are less than his era's, just that players were more efficient back then.
It makes you wonder how Gervin would be treated in today's environment. There are Carmelo Anthony comparisons to be made here, a pure shooter who goes down as one of the best scorers in league history. But Gervin made multiple conference finals, and shot over 50 percent from the field for his career.
Also, props to Gervin for including Moses Malone as his all-time power forward. Moses is criminally underrated historically.
