Penguins' Matt Murray is getting a street named after him before Game 5
The rookie goalie has been a huge part of this current playoff run for the Pittsburgh Penguins
Goaltender Matt Murray has been one of the stars of the Pittsburgh Penguins this postseason, and when he takes the ice on Thursday night for Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final against the San Jose Sharks he will have a chance to help his team win it all.
Before the game, the city of Pittsburgh is (kind of) renaming a street after the goalie to acknowledge his play so far this postseason.
Murray Avenue is one of the main streets in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of the city, and for one day (Thursday, when Game 5 will be played) it will briefly be known as "Matt Murray Avenue."
Basically, they were already halfway there. They just had to stick the Matt in front of it.
The call to do so came from a local radio morning show host (Bubba of Star 100.7) who, according to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, called a city councilman at 5:30 a.m. to share the idea. He told the Post-Gazette they are not making any predictions for the game on Thursday, but just looking to celebrate "how wonderful Matt Murray has been as we prepare for Game 5."
The city will print a new sign to be placed at the intersection of Murray and Forward avenues, according to the Post-Gazette.
Murray, who just turned 22 this postseason, took over as the Penguins' starting goalie in Game 3 of their first round series against the New York Rangers as regular starter Marc-Andre Fleury continued to recover from a concussion. He has played so well that even when Fleury was cleared to return to the lineup, Murray remained the starter. In 19 games this postseason Murray has a .925 save percentage for the Penguins.
