The New Jersey Devils have been one of this season’s real rough-and-tumble teams. They play a physical brand of hockey and there are a few players in the everyday lineup that are more than willing to drop the gloves with regularity.

The most likely player to throw down in any given game, however, is Jordin Tootoo. He has picked up five fighting majors already this year according to hockeyfights.com, accounting for nearly half of all of the Devils’ fighting majors this year, as they have 11.

With his club leading the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 late in the second period Thursday night, Tootoo opted to drop the mitts with Brad Malone, who is no stranger to fisticuffs either. Malone has three fighting majors so far this season, but he’s probably going to regret this most recent one.

The fight didn’t last long as the two locked up. Malone tried to gain some body position, but Tootoo proved too strong. He eventually overpowered Malone and drilled the Hurricanes forward with one of the most devastating punches we’ve seen this season.

The blow dropped Malone to the ice and immediately ended the fight. The last angle shown in the video above makes it appear as though Tootoo may have punched Malone so hard that the decals on Malone’s visor flew off.

The Hurricanes forward immediately left the ice and headed for the dressing room. He didn’t look all that stable getting off the ice, but Malone returned to the game after the intermission. The Hurricanes forward took five shifts in the third period after apparently being cleared to play.
