Juha Leimu, a defenseman for the Lahti Pelicans in Finland's top pro league, has scored quite a few goals this year. You’ll know that because he’s the guy on his team that gets to wear the gold helmet, which denotes the team’s leading scorer. They may need to upgrade to the platinum bucket after what he did in Liiga play against JYP.

The 32-year-old broke a record that has been on the books since 1961 according to Puck Daddy’s Sean Leahy. Leimu recorded the fastest hat trick in Liiga history when he scored three times in 44 seconds in the second period.

All three goals came from point-shots, and two of the three were on the same 5-on-3 power play. The goal that completed the hat trick came after JYP got one man back. JYP’s Anssi Lofman and Nolan Yonkman took five-minute majors within less than a minute of each other, which is what caused the extended two-man advantage. Lahti scored four goals thanks to that prolonged power play, the last three of which came off of Leimu’s stick.

The Pelicans still lost, though. They gave up a 5-3 lead in the third period and lost in overtime, 6-5.

While Leimu’s feat is impressive, it’s still 23 seconds over the NHL record, which was set by Bill Mosienko who scored three goals in 21 seconds back in 1952 for the Chicago Blackhawks. Still, this isn’t something you see very often, especially from a defenseman.
