Bayern Munich wins Bundesliga: German giants clinch eighth consecutive league title
Bayern has been unstoppable since play returned last month

Bayern Munich won its eighth straight Bundesliga title on Tuesday, clinching the crown with a 1-0 win at Werder Bremen. The three points mathematically eliminated second-place Borussia Dortmund from championship contention. The dominant Bavarians have been unbeatable since Bundesliga play resumed last month, winning all seven games.
It was Robert Lewandowski's lone goal on Tuesday that sealed three more points for the visitors and wrapped up a title race that looked over for weeks. After Bayern's 1-0 win at Dortmund on May 26, it always felt like the team would run away with the crown -- and that's just what happened.

It was a far from convincing performance from Bayern, but it was enough in the end. Bayern was reduced to 10 players in the 79th minute when Alphonso Davies was shown a red card, and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made a clutch save right before stoppage time to preserve the lead.
While Bayern's eight straight Bundesliga titles are a record, that wasn't the only accomplishment on the night. American defender Chris Richards was on the Bayern bench for the first time on Tuesday, and because he was on the team senior side that won the title, he became the first United States-born player to win the Bundesliga. German-born Thomas Dooley, who had a long career with the United States men's national team, won the title in 1990-91 with Kaiserslautern.
For Bayern, a domestic campaign that had some rough patches will conclude with them at the summit once again. Niko Kovac started the season as coach but left in November after a 5-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt. In came Hansi Flick. The team regained confidence, form and its dominating ways to cruise to the title in the end.
With just two matchdays to go, now the club has the chance to give some of its young guys more minutes. While the next two games don't really matter, Bayern will still have games that count for something. The Bavarians will face Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal final (German Cup) on July 4 before Champions League play likely resumes later in the summer. Bayern is on the verge of a spot in the UCL quarterfinals as the club holds a 3-0 lead over Chelsea in the round of 16 following their first leg in February.
