A goal from Cristiano Ronaldo just eight minutes in lifted Portugal to a crucial 1-0 victory over host Russia in the 2017 Confederations Cup group stage. After drawing the opener against Mexico, the Euro 2016 champs took all three points by capitalizing on poor defense by Russia.

Ronaldo got free at the back post for his first great chance and made no mistake, heading home for the lead. Take a look:

Both teams had chances to get a goal the rest of the way but neither could. Russia was sloppy in the final third while Portugal was denied time and time again by Igor Akinfeev.

The victory puts Portugal in first place in Group A with four points, jumping Russia's three points. Both are still in a good position to qualify for the next round, though Russia may have to beat Mexico to get to the semis.
