Tottenham stumble out of Europa League
A poor performance from Tottenham, who carried a two-goal advantage into the second leg against Dinamo Zagreb, saw Spurs shockingly crash out of the continental competition. A lethargic first half from Tottenham carried into the second half before a heroic performance from Dinamo striker Mislav Orsic completely changed the game. He recorded a hat trick Thursday to push the Croatian side through to the quarterfinals.
Orsic changed the trajectory for Dinamo, scoring a crucial goal just past the hour mark in the 62nd minute, and a stunning aggregate equalizer in the 82nd minute.
Orsic's second goal forced extra time in just the latest drama for the club this week. After winning 5-0 in domestic play on Sunday, their manager, Zoran Mamic, resigned after being sentenced to prison for fraud before their Europa League second leg.
But Orsic and the club rallied to pull off the crazy finish, and he scored the third and deciding goal in extra time.
Spurs even had a golden opportunity to win the game in the dying minutes. Tottenham could've advanced with just one goal on Thursday to win the tie on away goals, but Harry Kane was denied in the 116th minute.
Cruising into quarterfinals
Villarreal, Roma, Ajax have all advanced into Europa League quarterfinals after dominant performances in their round of 16. Ajax and Villarreal kept clean sheets through both legs, while Roma conceded just once while scoring five times. Gerard Moreno and Borja Mayoral each recorded a brace for Villarreal and Roma, respectively. Ajax's Dusan Tadic has been in top form for the Dutch side, and converted his second penalty kick during the second leg against Young Boys.
Slavia Prague topple Rangers
The tie was even on aggregate, 1-1, heading into their second-leg fixture, with Steven Gerrard's Rangers at home Thursday.
Peter Olayinka broke through on goal early in the match to give Slavia the lead with a header inside the box during the 14th minute and the Czech side retained the narrow lead into halftime. The wheels fell off the wagon early into the second half for Rangers as Kemar Roofe was issued a straight red card six minutes after being subbed into the match for a high boot to the face of Slavia goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar.
Things got worse in the 73rd minute when Leon Balogun was issued a second yellow and sent off, leaving Rangers with only nine players on the pitch. Slavia Prague midfielder Nicolae Stanciu struck the free kick from the edge of the box giving the club a commanding lead.
The second half was played out with physical challenges and tensions that lead to player scrums, but the Czech side is through to quarterfinals on a 3-1 aggregate.
Arsenal and Manchester United advance
Two English Premier sides have advanced into quarterfinals, though not on overly dominant performances.
Arsenal held a two-goal aggregate lead ahead of their match against Olympiacos, but Yousef El-Arabi scored the lone goal in the match, keeping things more interesting than the Gunners would have liked. Mikel Arteta's side was pressured during stretches of the game before holding on and playing out the narrow aggregate lead to carry them into quarterfinals.
Manchester United go into quarterfinals on a similar narrow margin of victory, needing only an away goal to advance against stronger competition in Milan. Paul Pogba provided the crucial goal after subbing on just three minutes prior.
