The U.S. men's national team's hopes of making the 2018 World Cup took a massive hit on Friday night. Costa Rica, who beat the U.S. 4-0 last year in Jurgen Klinsmann's last match, went into New Jersey and secured a brilliant 2-0 victory to put all the pressure on the Americans moving forward.

Marco Urena scored both goals, one on either side of halftime, to leave the USA fans at Red Bull Arena stunned, with his late goal cementing it.

"We lost to a team that played better than us tonight," USA coach Bruce Arena said in the post-match press conference.

The U.S. was dangerous at times but struggled at the back, as Urena's first-half goal came as a result of some poor defensive shape by the hosts:

Then in the 82nd minute, Urena finished it off:

The U.S. failed to create golden opportunities, and Keylor Navas produced a fantastic save on a deflected Christian Pulisic shot when it was 1-0, as Costa Rica shocked CONCACAF and took all three points.

The result now sees the U.S. in some trouble in qualifying, where it could finish the night level on points with Honduras for that third spot. The U.S. goes to Honduras on Tuesday in a match whose stakes tripled thanks to this performance.

"We have to put this past us real quick and regroup for Tuesday," Arena said.

"We'll take a day to reflect on this.

"Clearly walking away with zero points tonight is very disappointing."
