USA 1-1 Honduras: Wood nets massive late goal to avoid World Cup qualifying disaster
It was a great escape in Honduras for Bruce Arena's squad
Just when it looked like the World Cup qualifying hopes of the U.S. men's national team would be on life support, Bobby Wood saved the day. Following the shock home loss to Costa Rica, USA secured a massive 1-1 draw at Honduras on Tuesday to keep itself in good shape to reach Russia 2018. Had the U.S. lost, combined with a potential win from Panama later on Tuesday, the Americans could have found themselves in fifth place, two points back with two games to go, making direct qualification to the cup incredibly tough to achieve.
But after Romell Quioto's first-half goal, the U.S. battled back and got this goal from Wood in the 85th minute on a set piece when nothing was going right:

The result seemed unlikely after a poorly played first half, and despite not showing much in 90 minutes, this is a result that may just be the difference when it comes to making the cup, though it will come down to the final two matches in October - home to Panama and at Trinidad and Tobago.
"There's not even a crack open in the door to Russia for us," USA coach Bruce Arena said in his post-match press conference.
"That's a huge point for the U.S. team. The conditions were challenging for both teams. I'm really proud of our team."
It was gritty, physical, unlikely performance, and Wood came on as a super sub to save the day and keep the hopes of qualifying alive.
