What’s at stake: Three massive points in World Cup qualifying. Anything less than a victory for the U.S. will be a huge disappointment, while Honduras will take a draw from this one, which at worst would still see them in fourth place. If the U.S. fails to win, the hand inches closer to the panic button.

USA Roster: This roster has changed plenty in recent weeks with guys like Fabian Johnson and Bobby Wood being dropped with injury and Brad Guzan leaving camp to be with his wife, who delivered a daughter this week. Here’s the roster.

U.S. roster by position (Club; WCQ Caps/Goals):

  • Goalkeepers (3): David Bingham (San Jose Earthquakes; 0/0), Tim Howard (Colorado Rapids; 33/0), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake; 0/0)
  • Defenders (10): DaMarcus Beasley (Houston Dynamo; 33/6), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City; 10/1), John Brooks (Hertha Berlin/GER; 2/0) Geoff Cameron (Stoke City/ENG; 19/2), Omar Gonzalez (Pachuca/MEX; 12/0), Michael Orozco (Club Tijuana/MEX; 6/1), Tim Ream (Fulham/ENG; 2/0), Jorge Villafaña (Santos Laguna/MEX; 0/0), Walker Zimmerman (FC Dallas; 0/0), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City; 15/3)
  • Midfielders (9): Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas; 1/0), Alejandro Bedoya (Philadelphia Union; 6/0, Michael Bradley (Toronto FC/CAN; 31/5), Jermaine Jones (LA Galaxy; 16/0), Sacha Kljestan (New York Red Bulls; 18/2), Sebastian Lletget (LA Galaxy; 0/0), Dax McCarty (Chicago Fire; 0/0), Darlington Nagbe (Portland Timbers; 3/0), Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund/GER; 5/2)
  • Forwards (4): Jozy Altidore (Toronto FC/CAN; 33/16), Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders FC; 36/13), Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders FC; 3/0), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes; 0/0)

Projected USA XI: Howard; Villafana, Gonzalez, Brooks, Cameron; Nagbe, Bradley, Kljestan, Pulisic; Altidore, Dempsey.

Opponent: Honduras is a national team that is in its golden era. From 1930 till 2006, the nation made it to just one World Cup (1982). But the country has since qualified to two straight (2010, 2014) and has high hopes of making it to Russia in 2018. The team is in a good spot on fourth place in the standings, just a point behind second place.

When it comes to the squad, it’s filled with talented players but maybe not the most disciplined ones. The player to keep an eye on is Andy Najar, formerly of D.C. United. The former Northern Virginia native plays for Anderlecht in Belgium and he is quick and creative. The U.S. backline is going to have to keep him in front of them and try to cut off his lethal passing.

Player to watch: For the U.S., it is obviously Pulisic. This kid is 18 and already is the best player on the team. The rising star at Borussia Dortmund, Pulisic looks like a 26-year-old on the ball. He’s calm, smart and knows how to make an impact.

Last meeting in WCQ: The last time these two squared off in qualifying was during the last cycle. The U.S. lost 2-1 in San Pedro Sula on Feb. 6, 2013. Then the U.S., behind a Jozy Altidore goal, beat Honduras 1-0 on June 18, 2013.

Odds:

USMNT to win - 4/9
Draw - 13/5
Honduras to win - 6/1

Prediction: The U.S. needs three points here. And at home against a tricky Honduras team, the U.S. does it with a late Dempsey goal. USMNT 2, Honduras 1.
