WWE Saturday Night's Main Event results, grades: CM Punk earns world heavyweight title over Jey Uso
Punk became a seven-time world champion after outlasting Uso in the main event on Saturday
WWE Saturday Night's Main Event returned on Saturday with a four-match card comprised of four championship matches. Two of those four matches resulted in new champions, including the main event between CM Punk and Jey Uso for the vacant world heavweight championship.
While Uso gave a spirited challenge, Punk was able to outlast Uso to score the victory and win the title, his second time as world heavyweight champion since returning to WWE after retiring in 2014. Unlike Punk's last title victory, Seth Rollins was not there to cash in a Money in the Bank contract to steal the title away. Instead, Punk and Uso were battling over the title Rollins had to vacate after he suffered an injury.
The other title change came when Jade Cargill made quick work of Tiffany Stratton to win the WWE women's championship.
CBS Sports was with you the whole way through the event, providing updates and highlights as the action unfolded in the live blog below.
Drew McIntyre comes up short again against undisputed WWE champion Cody Rhodes
After a slow start to the match with a fair bit of posturing, things finally picked up. Rhodes played with fire in getting a bit physical with the referee in a match where a disqualification could cost Rhodes the title. McIntyre took over the match after the situation with the referee, allowing him to toss Rhodes around the ring. McIntyre also used the distraction of the championship belt being brought into the ring to hit a quick Claymore for a near fall.
McIntyre eventually drove Rhodes from the ring apron through the commentary desk, nearly resulting in Rhodes being counted out, again nearly winning the title via the unique rules of the match. Later, McIntyre shoved Rhodes into the referee, putting the referee down and allowing McIntyre to again bring the title belt into the ring. Before McIntyre could use the belt, Rhodes hit a DDT onto it, and then hit Cross Rhodes for the win. There wasn't much steam to the match and it's probably time to just move along from the rivalry, but the finish left the door open for things to continue. Cody Rhodes Def. Jade Cargill runs through Tiffany Stratton to win the WWE women's championship
The match got off to a quick start, with both women hitting big moves early. Shortly after a Cargill chokeslam, Stratton hit a swanton bomb for a near fall. Cargill came back with a series of somewhat awkward fallaway slams and a powerbomb for a two-count. Cargill followed up with two more powerbombs and Jaded for the win. This was a short match, and short matches can be fine, but this one felt rushed. In the end, Cargill takes the title, but it didn't feel like the win had any weight to it. Jade Cargill def. Dominik Mysterio outsmarts Penta and Rusev to retain the intercontinental title
Rusev and Penta immediately went after Mysterio before the challengers attempted to go at each other. Things broke down into the expected triple threat chaos, though Mysterio was generally the victim as everything broke down. Even when Mysterio got on a bit of a roll, things broke down, such as when Rusev countered a Mysterio 619 into an Accolade, only for Penta to break up the hold.
Mysterio eventually tried to throw a steel chair to Rusev and fake a strike for a disqualification, but there are no disqualifications in triple threat matches. Shortly after, things broke down to just Rusev and Penta, where Penta hit a Penta Driver for a near fall. Rusev managed to lock Penta in the Accolade shortly after, when the ring bell rang. But it was Mysterio who rang the bell, causing Rusev to break the hold, believing he'd won the intercontinental title. Penta took the ring bell hammer but missed Mysterio, hitting Rusev. Mysterio then threw Penta from the ring and hit a frog splash on Rusev to retain the title. This wasn't a great match but it was fine in accomplishing the goal, and that's enough. CM Punk overcomes Jey Uso to win the vacant world heavyweight championship
The match started with some basic wrestling by both men, easing into the flow of the match. After Punk ripped open Uso's shirt to land some chops, Uso tried to come back with a spear, which Punk countered into a front facelock. Shortly after, Punk landed a Go To Sleep, but Uso fell out of the ring to the floor. Punk left the ring to splash water on Uso and get him back in the ring.
Uso would come back with his own flurry of big moves, including a superkick and an Uso Splash for a two-count. After a bit more action, Punk tried for another Go To Sleep, but Uso fought free before the move could hit. Shortly after, Uso speared Punk through the ringside barricade. Uso threw Punk back into the ring and went for an Uso Splash, but Punk got the knees up and hit a Go To Sleep, which only resulted in a two-count.
Uso hit a Go To Sleep of his own, but Punk responded with his own spear for another near fall. Punk followed up with a Go To Sleep, Uso fell back onto Punk's shoulders but countered another Go To Sleep with a sleeper. Punk rolled through the submission into an Anaconda Vice, only for Uso to reach the ropes to break the hold. Uso then hit two superkicks before Punk countered a spear into a Go To Sleep, and hit a second to score the pin. A fine match that felt somewhere between a Raw main event and a pay-per-view match and nothing more or less. CM Punk def. Jey Uso via pinfall to win the title -- Grade: B
