WWE Raw results, recap, grades: Bobby Lashley returns to Hell in a Cell to battle Xavier Woods

WWE

One night after defeating Drew McIntyre in the Hell in a Cell main event, and as WWE began to shift their focus to July's Money in the Bank event, WWE champion Bobby Lashley found himself locked inside the Cell once again.

As Lashley celebrated his win over McIntyre, who was now no longer able to challenge Lashley for the title, he was interrupted by New Day members Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods. While this led to Lashley agreeing to defend his title against Kingston at Money In the Bank, it also resulted in Lashley facing Woods inside Hell in a Cell in the night's main event.

Lashley was ultimately able to survive a stiff challenge from Woods, but now must try to recover from two Hell in a Cell matches in two days as he prepares to face former WWE champion Kingston in a matter of weeks.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from the ThunderDome inside Yuengling Center in Tampa.

Bobby Lashley faces Xavier Woods inside Hell in a Cell

Bobby Lashley and MVP opened the show with a celebratory edition of the VIP Lounge. Lashley gave McIntyre credit for pushing him to his limits last night, but said McIntyre at his best couldn't beat him and now could never challenge for his title again. As MVP was leading a toast to Lashley, New Day's music hit as Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods made their way to the ring with a platter holding pieces of toast. While Lashley said Kingston wasn't on his level, Kingston pointed out he scored a win over Lashley the previous month. Kingston threw out a challenge for a match at Money in the Bank, a challenge Lashley quickly accepted but said he wanted Woods later in the night, leading Woods to make the challenge to have the match inside Hell in a Cell.

Bobby Lashley def. Xavier Woods via submission in a Hell in a Cell match. Woods took the fight right to Lashley throwing leg kicks before moving out of the way in the corner to post Lashley. Woods clocked Lashley in the head with a chair before continuing to wear the WWE champion out with the chair outside the ring. Lashley went on a dominant run before Woods again targeted the leg and grabbed a kendo stick to lay into the champ. Woods also put Lashley through a table with a rope-walk elbow for a near fall. Moments later, Lashley sent Woods into a chair in the corner before hitting a spear and locking in the Hurt Lock for the victory. Lashley continued to attack Woods after the match, forcing Kingston to look on while locked outside the Cell as the show went off the air.

On one hand, seeing Woods get a chance to shine in a big match and also moving Lashley along to a new challenge are incredibly welcome things on Raw. On the other, a fourth Hell in a Cell match in four days -- this one with literally zero build -- is a great way to run one of your rarest gimmick matches into the ground in a hurry. In the end, the match was good enough for the good to outweigh the bad, even if the booking remains questionable. Grade: B+

What else happened on WWE Raw?

  • Ricochet def. AJ Styles via pinfall in a Money in the Bank qualifying match. The Viking Raiders came to ringside during the match to attack Omos. In the ensuing distraction, Ricochet countered a Phenomenal Forearm with a knee to the face for the win.
  • Asuka & Naomi def. Eva Marie & Doudrop via pinfall in a Money in the Bank qualifying match. Before the match, Marie was asked about her "protégé," with Piper Niven attempting to say her name before Marie cut her off to "officially" name her Doudrop. Marie tagged out immediately after the bell and left the ring apron, leaving Doudrop to face Asuka and Naomi alone. Marie tried to tag in to get a glory pin, but after Naomi kicked out, she attempted to immediately tag back out. Doudrop instead hopped off the apron, refusing the tag while Naomi scored a roll-up.
  • Rhea Ripley vs. Charlotte Flair was booked for Money in the Bank. Ripley was admonished by Sonya Deville and Adam Pearce for getting intentionally disqualified at Hell in a Cell before Flair interrupted. This led to the rematch being booked for Money in the Bank.
  • John Morrison def. Randy Orton via pinfall in a Money in the Bank qualifying match. Riddle came to ringside with his scooter to chase wheelchair-bound Miz, frustrating Orton and allowing him to get blindsided before Morrison hit Starship Pain for the win.
  • Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross def. Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler via pinfall in a Money in the Bank qualifying match. Cross debuted a new look before the match, dressing like a superhero. Bliss attempted to use her magic to make Reginald slap Jax, but he managed to stop herself. Cross then picked up the win with a version of a la magistral cradle.
  • Riddle def. Drew McIntyre via pinfall in a Money in the Bank qualifying match. McIntyre was advised not to have the match after sustaining damage in Hell in a Cell but demanded to go on. Orton watched much of the match from the entrance ramp but did not interfere before Riddle scored a roll-up victory.
  • Mansoor sought advice from Jaxson Ryker backstage, being told to "never let your enemy escape" before Mustafa Ali interrupted to tell Mansoor he was asking for advice from the wrong people. Ali said Mansoor should be asking why he wasn't involved in the Money in the Bank qualifiers.
