WWE Raw results, recap, grades: CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre set for SummerSlam with Seth Rollins as referee

After half a year of waiting, Drew McIntyre and CM Punk are finally set to go one-on-one. McIntyre vs. Punk was made official for SummerSlam during Monday's episode of WWE Raw.

The tension between these two has been building through Punk's return in November, with McIntyre injuring Punk during the Royal Rumble and then Punk getting revenge on McIntyre by screwing him out of the world heavyweight championship several times over as revenge.

But another major player in the feud will also have a part to play at SummerSlam, which takes place in two weeks in Cleveland. Seth Rollins, who has his own deep-running issues with both Punk and McIntyre, accepted the role of special guest referee for the match.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from Resch Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre set for SummerSlam, with Seth Rollins as ref

CM Punk came to the ring and quickly announced that he has been medically cleared to compete, which means he can finally give Drew McIntyre the beating he has coming. Knowing McIntyre would eventually come to the ring, Punk began taping his fists. McIntyre did, indeed, come out, but said he didn't want to get in the ring yet because their match is too big for Green Bay. Several officials held back Punk before Adam Pearce entered to say McIntyre's suspension is over, Punk is cleared and now the two will have their match at SummerSlam. Punk was still trying to get to McIntyre when Pearce said if either man touches the other before SummerSlam, the match would be off and the man who initiates will be suspended indefinitely.

Pearce then said the match needs a referee and Seth Rollins' music hit. Rollins hit the ring and announced himself as the referee and a man who wanted to put both Punk and McIntyre in their respective places.

This was always where things would end up. Well, aside from the Rollins-as-referee part, which was a mild surprise. But we've gotten there, to the big match that has been brewing since the Royal Rumble. There's actual heat here, beyond the performative modern wrestling audience style of "heat" and that's something to be happy about because it doesn't always happen with the way modern wrestling operates, which isn't a shot at modern wrestling but simply a truth of how the way we consume entertainment has evolved. Not too much happened in the segment overall but the fact that Punk vs. McIntyre is locked in for SummerSlam is worth getting excited for. Grade: B+

What else happened on WWE Raw?

  • Gunther and Damian Priest brawled to start the show. Gunther was in the ring for a promo where he called Priest and Judgment Day street trash and told Priest he could hand over the world heavyweight championship and go back to the trailer park rather than facing him at SummerSlam. Priest came to the ring and a brawl broke out with both men repeatedly fighting through officials to get at each other again.
  • Bron Breakker def. Ilja Dragunov via referee stoppage. The match was to determine who would get a shot at intercontinental champion Sami Zayn at SummerSlam. After the hard-hitting match one would expect from the pairing, Dragunov hit Breakker with a Death Valley Driver on the ring apron. As he tried to then leap from the apron to hit an H Bomb on the floor, Breakker leapt up and delivered a spear that left Dragunov down on the outside to force the stoppage.
  • Sonya Deville def. Lyra Valkyria via pinfall after Deville's Advocate.
  • Judgment Day attacked Jey Uso backstage. Dominik Mysterio was still upset about Uso coming onto Rhea Ripley last week, she said she was just having fun and told Mysterio not to go starting anything. After she left, Finn Balor and JD McDonagh amped Mysterio up, telling him he had to do something about the situation, leading to the attack.
  • Karrion Kross & Authors of Pain def. Akira Tozawa, Otis & Xavier Woods via pinfall when Kross pinned Woods.
  • Uncle Howdy attacked Chad Gable after Gable and The Creed Brothers -- the new Alpha Academy -- confronted Tozawa, Otis and Maxxine Dupri after the previous match. Gable gave the trio the chance to come back to the group but Otis said no, leading to a brawl. The lights then went out and the Wyatt Sick6 came to the entrance ramp, except for Howdy, who appeared in the ring and hit Gable with Sister Abigail.
  • Sheamus took out Bronson Reed and Pete Dunne as Reed and Dunne were set to start their match. Sheamus has taken issue with both men having issues with him of late.
  • Dominik Mysterio told Liv Morgan that he hates her. Ripley, furious Mysterio attacked Uso, dragged him to the ring and yelled for Morgan to come out, saying she can have him. Mysterio begged her to hear him out and yelled at Morgan, who was out in the crowd, for "ruining his life" several times, saying he hates her. Morgan left in tears.
  • Zelina Vega def. Zoey Stark via pinfall with a Yoshi Tonic.
  • Jey Uso & Sami Zayn def. JD McDonagh & Finn Balor via pinfall when Uso hit McDonagh with an Uso Splash. Balor and McDonagh asked for the match because they were looking to prove a point but the tag team champions instead came up short in the non-title match. As Uso's music played and the show was about to go off the air, Bron Breakker ran to the ring and hit Zayn with a spear before sliding out before Uso could get to him.
