WWE Raw results, recap, grades: CM Punk vs. Seth Rollins cage match ends with Roman Reigns attacking both men

WrestleMania season can lead to almost as many memorable moments as WrestleMania can itself. That was the case during Monday's episode of Raw.

An epic steel cage main event between CM Punk and Seth Rollins ended with the return of Roman Reigns. Reigns, furious at having been sidelined by a Rollins attack during the Royal Rumble, first took out his frustrations on Rollins before turning his attention to Punk. In the end, fans were treated to the setup for a likely WrestleMania match between the three future Hall of Famers.

CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Roman Reigns returns and takes out CM Punk and Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins def. CM Punk in a steel cage match. The main event was a fittingly epic cage match between two men who have spent years hating each other. Both Punk and Rollins kicked out of multiple finishers as the action escalated. At one point, Punk could have walked out of the cage door to win the match, but Rollins told him that if he wanted to prove himself, he needed to finish the fight, not escape the cage. Moments later, with Rollins having the advantage but slumped in the corner, Roman Reigns ran to the ring and pulled Rollins to the outside, technically making Rollins the winner by escape.

Once the match was over, Reigns delivered a Superman punch and a spear to Rollins. He followed that up by hitting Rollins with a stomp outside the ring. Reigns continued the assault by setting Rollins up for another stomp, this time on the ring steps, only to have Adam Pearce and WWE officials run in to stop him. Reigns then turned his attention to the ring where he saw Paul Heyman tending to Punk. This amplified Reigns' rage and he went into the ring to throw Punk into the cage and hit a spear before posing as the match went off the air.

The main event was a solid piece of business that set up a big match for WrestleMania. Punk vs. Rollins vs. Reigns is about as big of a match as WWE can put on without the involvement of someone like The Rock. In fact, it is a bigger match than the world championship match between Gunther and Jey Uso without much of a doubt. We will just have to see what moves WWE makes in the coming weeks. It also shouldn't be overlooked just how good the match between Punk and Rollins was. Grade: A

What else happened on WWE Raw?

  • Jey Uso def. Grayson Waller via pinfall with a spear. After the match, Austin Theory jumped in the ring to blindside Uso. Uso eventually turned the tables, tossing Waller from the ring and hitting Theory with a spear and an Uso Splash. That's when Gunther struck, attacking from behind and choking Uso unconscious.
  • AJ Styles took out Logan Paul after a Paul promo. Paul came to the ring and took shots at Cody Rhodes for not accepting The Rock's offer to "buy his soul," saying that he would happily take the offer. Paul then said he was out because he knew AJ Styles wanted to call him out and then singled out Andrew Schultz in the crowd. Schultz said nobody was there to see Paul, enraging Paul and leading to Paul pulling Schultz over the ringside barricade and into the ring when Styles ran in to make the save.
  • New Day def. LWO via pinfall with the Up, Up, Down, Down on Rey Mysterio. A masked "luchador" -- obviously Chad Gable -- jumped the guardrail and attacked Mysterio, which set up the finish. The masked man then ran away through the crowd. Gable was later confronted about the situation but insisted it was not him as a man wearing the mask was handcuffed in the background.
  • Judgment Day was shown backstage, with Finn Balor complaining about Bron Breakker until Dominik Mysterio told Balor that he talked to Adam Pearce to set up a match for Balor against Breakker for the intercontinental championship.
  • Cody Rhodes cut an in-ring promo. Rhodes said it was easy for John Cena to attack him at Elimination Chamber because Cena had hit him with a low blow and had backup. Rhodes then called Cena a moron and said that there is one statistic he believes in and that's that "seventeen will never happen" and he gets the privilege of beating Cena as he tries to win that record 17th world championship.
  • Raquel Rodriguez def. Bayley via pinfall with a powerbomb. As expected, Liv Morgan and Dominik Mysterio ran interference to help Rodriguez get the win. The match was to determine a No. 1 contender for the women's intercontinental championship.
