WWE Raw results, recap, grades: Rollins stripped, Uso vs. Punk set for world heavyweight championship match
Jey Uso won a battle royal to secure a shot to face CM Punk on Saturday Night's Main Event
With Seth Rollins injured by an attack from Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed, WWE Raw general manager Adam Pearce was left with no choice but to strip Rollins of the world heavyweight championship during Monday's episode of Raw. By the end of the night, Jey Uso and CM Punk were set for a vacant title clash on Nov. 1.
Punk had already earned his title shot by winning a triple threat match last Monday night. Uso had to earn his shot in a main event battle royal. That battle royal was missing both Reed and Breakker, who were denied an opportunity to participate in the match after bullying Pearce earlier in the night.
In other big news from Monday night, AJ Styles and Dragon Lee defeated Judgment Day's Finn Balor and JD McDonagh to win the world tag team championship.
CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California.
Jey Uso vs. CM Punk set for world heavyweight championship match
At the top of the show, Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed came to the ring with Paul Heyman. In the ring, Raw general manager Adam Pearce announced that Seth Rollins underwent major surgery after Breakker and Reed's attack last week. Due to this, Pearce was forced to strip Rollins of the world heavyweight championship. With CM Punk having already earned a shot at the title, he would be one of the men to wrestle for the vacant belt at Saturday Night's Main Event on Nov. 1. Punk's opponent would be determined in a battle royal later in the evening. Breakker bullied Pearce into having to say "please" for Breakker to hand over the title belt. After Pearce left the ring, Heyman explained that Rollins couldn't shoulder the responsibilities of leading The Vision, so Breakker and Reed used ambition and intensity to rip Rollins from the group and become top guys.
Later in the show, Heyman went to Pearce's office to petition for Breakker and Reed to be entered into the battle royal. Pearce forced Heyman to say "please," but denied Heyman's request anyway. Heyman eventually had to calm Breakker and Reed down, telling them to trust in, and listen to, him.
Jey Uso won a battle royal to earn a world heavyweight title shot. Throughout the match, Jimmy Uso repeatedly saved Jey from elimination. However, when Jimmy was tangled up in the ropes with LA Knight, Jey took advantage of the situation to dump both men over the top rope. Dominik Mysterio, who had already been eliminated earlier in the match, though the referees missed the elimination, and Jey were the final two. Unsurprisingly, Jey won to secure his spot against Punk for the vacant title. Jimmy was visibly upset with Jey after the match.
Order of eliminations:
- Otis
- Akira Tozawa
- Dragon Lee
- Penta
- Rusev
- Ivar
- El Grande Americano
- JD McDonagh
- Finn Balor
- Sheamus
- Kofi Kingston
- AJ Styles
- Jimmy Uso
- LA Knight
- Dominik Mysterio
Uso and Knight were the only sensible winners heading into the match, given their history with Punk and position in recent months. WWE was forced to pivot from plans and clearly didn't want to run with Breakker on top yet, so the promotion went with CM Punk vs. Jey Uso, which is an easy enough match to promote. Grade: B

- World Tag Team Championship -- AJ Styles & Dragon Lee def JD McDonagh & Finn Balor (c) via pinfall to win the titles. The wild match ended when Styles hit a Balor with a Styles Clash.
- Intercontinental Championship -- Dominik Mysterio (c) def. Rusev via pinfall to retain the title. Penta interfered when Mysterio attempted to leave during the match. This led to a brief confrontation between Rusev and Penta, and in the ensuing chaos, Mysterio was able to hit a low blow on Rusev to set up a 619 and a frog splash to win.
- Women's Intercontinental Championship -- Maxxine Dupri def. Becky Lynch (c) via disqualification. As Dupri remained competitive throughout the match, Lynch eventually snapped and hit Dupri with the championship belt, resulting in a disqualification.
