WWE SmackDown results, recap, grades: John Cena vs. Randy Orton set for Backlash, Aleister Black returns
Cena and Orton run back their legendary feud a quarter century after meeting
John Cena and Randy Orton will square off, potentially for the last time, 25 years after they first shook hands. Undisputed WWE champion Cena challenged his legendary rival to a match at Backlash. It's the biggest story coming out of an eventful Friday Night SmackDown.
On Monday, Orton fired the first volley, reigniting a two decade-long feud. On Friday, Cena promised to erase Orton's family legacy. The legendary superstars share 31 world title reigns recognized by the WWE. Orton can add to the tally and narrow the gap between them by beating Cena in Orton's hometown of St. Louis.
SmackDown also featured the return of Aleister Black, a wild Tables, Ladders and Chairs match for the WWE tag team championships, and a women's United States title match.
CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
Cena and Orton prepare for one last legendary encounter
Cena and Orton kicked off SmackDown on Friday. The conversation got to a bizarre start with Orton chalking up Cena's sour attitude to a lack of maturity. Orton claimed that having children would open Cena's eyes. Cena retorted by claiming he was too busy raising the WWE fans' kids for the last 25 years. The most amusing part of the segment came after Cena betrayed a 6-year-old fan for allegedly flipping him off. Once they moved on from parenthood, Cena promised to retire as undisputed WWE champion, forever trapping Orton at 14 world title reigns. Cena's logic is flawed, considering WWE has two recognized world titles. Orton challenged Cena to a match, which Cena accepted under the condition it takes place at Backlash. The champion dropped Orton with a cheap shot, but "The Viper" came out on top with an RKO.
Cena's heel turn isn't quite working for me. His gripes are legitimate, but the execution feels one-note and stilted. He's most compelling when improvising and incorporating the fans. Incorporating Orton's family legacy, their legendary rivalry and respective title reigns is good stuff. The fatherhood angle was bizarre. Grade: B+
