Guthrie was granted his release from the Rangers on Monday, John Blake of the Texas Rangers reports.
Guthrie was in the mix for the fifth starter spot until Yu Darvish's expected return in May, but the Rangers have decided to go elsewhere for that position. Guthrie has a lot of major league experience, which could help him land on another major league roster, although the back issues he's been having this spring could also deter some teams. With the veteran out of the fold, AJ Griffin and Nick Martinez are the two remaining competitors for the final rotation spot.
