Instant Fantasy Reaction: Vikings pick good-hands man in Laquon Treadwell
Laquon Treadwell has the size and hands the Vikings offense desperately needs, but will his lack of speed cost him big stats?
The Vikings passing game left a lot to be desired last season, and that's putting it nicely.
Only the Rams averaged fewer pass yards per game and threw fewer touchdowns. So it made sense that Minnesota spent its first-round pick on Ole Miss receiver Laquon Treadwell.
In 34 career games, Treadwell reeled in 202 passes for 2,393 yards and 21 touchdowns. Most of the work came in 2015.
When it comes to size, Treadwell is fantastic. He's built like Dez Bryant (6-foot-2, 221 pounds). When it comes to speed, though, Treadwell is a clone of Anquan Boldin: savvy enough to find ways to get open because of his route-running, not because of his fast feet. He ran a 4.63 in the 40-yard dash. We're looking at the next chain-mover for the Vikings.
Treadwell gives Teddy Bridgewater a nice big target with a big catching radius to grow into an outside threat. Considered the most NFL-ready receiver among his rookie peers, Treadwell has to be considered a candidate for over 60 catches this season. That should result in some nice reception totals and make him a quality reserve receiver in PPR leagues.
But it's what he does with those catches that matters. Getting close to 800 yards comes with the territory when you get a lot of targets, but the touchdowns could be few and far between. What do the Vikings typically do when they're inside the 5-yard line? Not pass, not when they have Adrian Peterson.
Treadwell, like a number of other rookie receivers taken in the draft, is a nice target for the double-digit rounds. He might even be the first rookie wideout picked. But no one should try plugging him into a meaningful role in Fantasy lineups. We'll all wait and see how he develops.
