Skip Schumaker mans DH position for Reds
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

The Reds play their first game of the season at an American League park on Saturday, and Skip Schumaker will be the team's first designated hitter of the year.

Schumaker will DH in the first game of a doubleheader, batting eighth in the lineup. He's also started two games in left field and one at second base this year.

Reds' Hamilton, Byrd, Mesoraco out of lineup Sunday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Reds outfielders Billy Hamilton and Marlon Byrd are joining catcher Devin Mesoraco (hip) on the bench for Sunday's game against the Braves.

Hamilton is getting a break after making 11 straight starts out of the leadoff spot, while Byrd has seen 11 straight starts in left field. It's just a regular day off for both players, who will get a two-day break due to the team's scheduled off-day Monday, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Both Hamilton and Byrd are available if needed Sunday. With the pair out, Skip Schumaker will lead off and play left field, while Brennan Boesch will bat seventh and play center field.

Mesoraco hasn't appeared in the starting lineup since the first week of the season, as he's continued to rehab from a left hip impingement while remaining on the active roster.

The Reds are road favorites (-142) in Atlanta with Johnny Cueto on the mound.

Reds' Billy Hamilton, Devin Mesoraco out of lineup Sunday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton (groin) and Devin Mesoraco (hip) are not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

Hamilton came out of Saturday's game with a groin strain. With the speedster out of the lineup, Skip Schumaker will lead off for the Reds Sunday night. Mesoraco hasn't played since last Sunday due to a hip injury, though he was expected to be available at some point this weekend. Tucker Barnhart will draw the start at catcher Sunday.

The Reds are heavy underdogs (+165) against the Cardinals in St. Louis Sunday.

Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips leaves Tuesday's game
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips left Tuesday's game against the Cubs with an undisclosed injury after attempting to reach second base, the team announced.

Phillips tried to reach second evasively around Starlin Castro, but the two collided and Phillips fell on top of him. Phillips stayed in for another half inning, but was replaced by Skip Schumaker. Phillips went 1 for 2 with a run scored before exiting.

Reds OF Skip Schumaker not concerned with lack of playing time
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Reds outfielder Skip Schumaker knows at his age it's tough to expect a lot of innings. He's willing to concede innings in pursuit of another championship, reports MLB.com.

"My goal at this stage of my career is to win another ring," Schumaker said. "People say that but some people just want big numbers. Of course, I want to have success but there is nothing better than being the last man standing on the field -- nothing better in the world. I just hope that guys here experience that. … Once you taste that, you want it back. That's what I want. Helping guys get there is a good thing."

Schumaker hit .235 with two homeruns and 22 RBI in 83 games in 2014. He is not planning on having to start a lot of games this year.

"I expect that to happen. That means we are doing really good. That's what I'm hoping for," Schumaker said. "You don't want your bench guys starting 50-80 games. That means we've got problems, and injury problems."
