Rio Olympics 2016: Jamaica's Elaine Thompson cruises to gold in 100m final
Thompson took claim over the title of world's fastest woman
The world's fastest woman still hails from Jamaica after Elaine Thompson's dominant performance in the 100-meter final on Saturday.
The 24-year-old Thompson clocked in at 10.71 and ran away from a highly competitive field that for the first time ever yielded seven women who finished under 11 seconds.
Thompson's showing was so masterful that the race for second was the only thing in question with about 20 meters remaining. American Tori Bowie, one of only two Americans who qualified for the final, claimed silver with a a time of 10.83.

Thompson's effort will be remembered for a long time, but the talk before the race mainly surrounded her fellow countrywoman, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who was aiming for a third consecutive gold medal in the 100 meters.
Fraser-Pryce fell short of becoming the first woman to win three gold medals in the same individual event, but she doesn't leave Rio without some hardware. The 29-year-old won the bronze with a time of 10.86.

Jamaica swept the 100 meters in 2008 in Beijing, and for the second straight Olympics, it claimed two out of three medals. It's safe to say there's a dynasty in the works.
