Rio Olympics: Dutch cyclist in intensive care after scary crash in final leg
Annamiek van Vleuten was in the lead before a frightening crash on a turn
Cyclist Annamiek van Vleuten of the Netherlands was in the lead, holding off a pack of challengers in the final stages of the women's road race on Sunday on Copacabana beach before suffering a scary crash.
Van Vleuten was trying to make a quick, right turn on a steep corner, but was going a bit too fast. She toppled over the front of her handle bars and hit her head on the pavement. After initial reports of her being OK, team officials reported that van Vleuten suffered three spinal fractures and a concussion, according to the Washington Post.
You can see the crash here. Her teammate Anna van der Breggen won the gold medal after a furious chase down the home stretch of the race.
"It looked pretty bad. I thought she was dead," van der Breggen said per the Guardian. "I was really shocked when I saw the crash, and it didn't look good, but I had to focus and keep on with the race."
Van Vleuten will spend the night in intensive care.
