Former LSU tight end Tyler Edwards died Saturday night in Monroe at the age of 26, apparently because of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Monroe Police told The Advocate that Edwards' body had been sent away for an official autopsy "but preliminary information indicated that his death was a suicide." According to a school spokesperson, Edwards left the university in 2013 but had re-enrolled this fall to work on finishing his degree.

Edwards was a member of the LSU football team from 2008 to 2012. He redshirted his first season, saw some action as a reserve and then was ruled ineligible for the 2012 season, his senior year.

Edwards' older brother, Eric Edwards, also played tight end at LSU and was a member of Nick Saban's 2003 national championship team.
