Who's Playing

South Alabama @ Appalachian State

Current Records: South Alabama 5-4; Appalachian State 7-2

What to Know

A Sun Belt battle is on tap between the Appalachian State Mountaineers and the South Alabama Jaguars at 2:30 p.m. ET Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Appalachian State is out to keep their four-game home win streak alive.

Last week, the Mountaineers turned the game against the Arkansas State Red Wolves into a track meet and took the gold after outgaining them 461 yards to 199. Appalachian State was the clear victor by a 48-14 margin over Arkansas State. The game was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point Appalachian State had established a 38-14 advantage. RB Camerun Peoples and RB Nate Noel were among the main playmakers for Appalachian State as the former rushed for one TD and 116 yards on 14 carries and the latter rushed for one TD and 122 yards on 23 carries.

Appalachian State's defense was a presence as well, as it got past the Red Wolves' offensive line to sack the quarterback four times for a total loss of 28 yards. Leading the way was LB Nick Hampton and his two sacks. Hampton now has five sacks this year.

Meanwhile, South Alabama came up short against the Troy Trojans last week, falling 31-24. South Alabama's loss came about despite a quality game from QB Desmond Trotter, who passed for two TDs and 137 yards on 32 attempts in addition to rushing for one TD and 43 yards. Trotter had some trouble finding his footing against Arkansas State two weeks ago, so this was a step in the right direction.

Appalachian State is the favorite in this one, with an expected 21.5-point margin of victory. They might be worth taking a chance on against the spread as they are currently on a three-game streak of ATS wins.

Appalachian State's win brought them up to 7-2 while the Jaguars' defeat pulled them down to 5-4. Two defensive stats to keep an eye on: The Mountaineers are 192nd worst in the nation in rushing touchdowns allowed, with 14 on the season. South Alabamas have had an even harder time: they are stumbling into the matchup with the 163rd most rushing touchdowns allowed in the nation, having given up 12 on the season. It's possible one of these Achilles' heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
