There's a chance Sun Life Stadium won't be ready for Miami's opener. (USATSI)

Miami is scheduled to open the 2016 season, at home, against Florida A&M in Sun Life Stadium ... but there's a chance that won't happen.

The stadium, which is home of the NFL's Miami Dolphins (and owned by the club) as well as the Hurricanes, has been undergoing some upgrades this offseason, and they're a bit behind schedule.

In fact, the Miami Herald describes the construction as being "significantly behind schedule," which is why the Canes are reportedly putting together contingency plans in case the stadium isn't ready in time.

It's possible that Miami could open the season against Florida A&M in FIU Stadium at -- where else -- FIU. Now, while that wouldn't be too strange, the following week, when Miami is scheduled to host FAU, FIU Stadium will be in use by FIU. Another possible option, Marlins Park, will be in use by the Miami Marlins as they host the Los Angeles Dodgers that same weekend, so that wouldn't work, either.

So should the stadium upgrades be severely delayed, it's not impossible that Miami's home game against FAU could be played at FAU.

Of course, all of this is hypothetical. The Dolphins are scheduled to host a preseason game at the stadium on Aug. 25, and the team says they fully expect the stadium to be ready in time for that game.

But this is southern Florida we're talking about. Should the area experience some severe weather, such as a hurricane, the Hurricanes could find themselves homeless for a few weeks.
