Cubs' Erich Uelmen: Falls to Cubs with final pick of fourth round

The Cubs have selected Uelmen with the 135th overall pick in the 2017 first-year player draft.
The 6-foot-3 right-hander from Cal Poly is the fifth consecutive college pitcher selected by the Cubs. Uelmen emerged as one of the top arms in the Big West during his junior campaign, submitting a 2.93 ERA while striking out just over a batter an inning. He features a low-to-mid-90s sinking fastball and quality slider, but may need to develop a third pitch to boost his chances of becoming a starter in the big leagues. Uelmen achieved his impressive college numbers despite noticing a dip in velocity this spring from what he had displayed over the past summer, so the Cubs may look to limit his innings for the rest of 2017 once he signs with the team.
